The Employer of Choice

With the new employment search environment, it is becoming clear that today’s workers are looking for more out of their employers. Now with our recent 3.4% unemployment announcement, employers are struggling to find quality talent. What is an employer to do?

Back in the old days (pre-covid), you would simply have to pay more to keep employees happy. Now it is a much different time! Today’s employees are looking for more than just a paycheck and today’s employers must evolve to meet what the employees want.

First of all, wages must meet their basic needs but they aren’t the most important factor in their decision. And yes, the ball appears to be on the employee’s side.

Here are some requests that I have been hearing.

Flexible Working Conditions. That may be time, location, or days. They seem to want to work on their own schedule. Studies are proving that when an employee is happy with their flexibility, they actually get more down in the allotted amount of time. Which tells me they may be able to produce more. This freedom makes today’s employees really happy. It’s time for the employer to evolve to this new today’s employee.

Appreciative Environment. They want to feel like the job is something valuable and that they are appreciated for their work. Thank you is a lot but there is more. Not necessarily climbing the corporate ladder but a true appreciation for them being a part of the team. Recognition, rewards, and reasons are some of what is driving many employees today.

Culture, beliefs, and values. Similarly, today’s workers want to work at a company that has a great culture. They want to know that everyone is pushing together and that they are part of something bigger. Acceptance of their differences and alignment with their values is sometimes worth more than a salary. Company culture is leading the reasons an employee stays with an employer. Designing the right culture and leading it from the top down is attractive to everyone on board.

As business owners think about attracting and retaining great talent in today’s space, it’s time to look more at

what they want more than what pay you can offer them. This model can make your company the employer of choice.
